The city of Bordeaux has an outstanding architectural heritage that is listed
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gironde is France’s biggest département and covers 10,000 sq. km. The
Gironde Estuary, formed where the Garonne and Dordogne rivers meet, is wide
enough to merit the description of "European Mississippi". Gironde is also
home to Europe’s highest sand dune, the 112-metre-high Dune du Pyla, a string
of lakes, Europe’s largest expanse of forest in the Landes de Gascogne area
and 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) of vineyards with a myriad of
appellations and prestigious wines.
With its 2,750km (1,700 miles) of hiking paths, 1000 km (620 miles) of
sign-posted cycle paths and 127 km (80 miles) of coastline, Gironde has a lot
to offer in terms of sporting activities: hiking, cycling, surfing, water
skiing, sailing, horse riding and golf courses.
